The Origin of Birthstones

Despite a recent rise in the popularity of birthstone jewellery (for good reason, we might add), these beautiful gems have been around far longer than one might think.

Scholars trace the first recorded occurrence of birthstones to the book of Exodus in the Bible, in reference to the twelve stones on the breastplate of Aaron. Originally believed to have been symbolic of the twelve tribes of Israel, early century scholars Flavius Josephus and St. Jerome were the first to associate the twelve breastplate gems with twelve months of the year. For the next several centuries that followed, common practice was to own all twelve gemstones and wear a different one each month, symbolising various qualities and traits the wearer would hope to embody.

Over the years, the original stones were frequently changed, and the tradition of birthstone jewellery becomes increasingly difficult to place – until, in 1912, the National Association of Jewelers sought to standardise the list of birthstones available in the American market. A final revised inventory of birthstones was announced in 1952, offering us the collection of gems that we know and love today.

An amalgamation of both ancient and modern stones spread over each of the twelve months creates a depth of history, beauty and symbolism from which we create our signature Bespoke Birthstone Range. Rooted in meaning and rich in colour, we believe birthstone jewellery to be the perfect embodiment of individuality. Whether you’re leaning into the symbolism of each specific gemstone, or just looking for a one-of-a-kind commemoration of those you love, these little gems are a surefire win. Don’t believe us? Just look at the history books.

Are you as in love with birthstones as we are? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments down below. Be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming blog on the meaning behind each birthstone!
